Meath Championship 2011 Report

Meath Championships 2011

After four great days of competition, the Meath Championships are now over for another year. It was lovely to see so many of our young athletes taking part, particularly those who ventured onto the track for the first time.  Well done to everyone.

My performance of Day 2 was the boys and girls under fourteen 1500m.  Both boys and girls were sent off together, producing a fantastically tactical race between Eoin Smyth and Rosie Finnegan, king and queen of Meath cross country running.

Rosie took on most of the running with Eoin sitting comfortably behind.  With 300m to go he hit the front with a determined burst and looked a clear winner.  But Rosie paced herself perfectly, gradually closing the gap to catch Eoin within feet of the finishing line.

This was a class performance by two outstanding athletes.  Talking to Eoin afterwards, he didn’t like being beaten by ‘a girl’, but he was pleased with his run.

My most memorable performance of Day 3 was the boys under ten 500m.  All first three boys were from Skryne, with the winner Niall Moreland running in the colors of Cushinstown AC.  Second and third were Niall Finnerty and Shane Smyth.

Well done to Gary Browne who in his first competition finished fourth in a very competitive Ball Throw under ten.  Also there was a notable performance by James Finnerty, finishing second in the under 13 600m, lowering his time to 1.50.7.

The relays, on Wednesday evening, the 18th of May, were the final day of competition.  Tara Ac had seven teams taking part with fine performances all round.  The run of the evening was the under 13 team, competing under 14, snatching the bronze, with the ‘real’ under 14 taking gold.

See the attached list for our complete results.
